A Compassionate Approach to Weight This New Year: Focus on Values, Not Numbers

As the calendar turns, many of us feel the pressure of “New Year, New You” messaging. Traditionally, this means setting weight-loss goals, often rigid, numbers-driven, and rooted in self-criticism. But what if there’s a kinder, more sustainable way to approach health?

Be Well Doncaster advocates for a Compassionate Approach to Weight (Doncaster's Compassionate Approach to Weight - City of Doncaster Council). It’s a holistic approach that moves beyond fad diets and punishing workouts. We believe that weight loss isn’t a race, and it’s not one-size-fits-all. Instead of obsessing over the scales we encourage people to nourish their bodies, support people to understand the root cause of weight gain and build habits that feel good and last.

This aligns with the idea of values-based goals. Rather than saying, “I want to lose 10 pounds,” consider:

  • “I want to feel strong and energised.”

  • “I want to prioritise self-care and connection.”

  • “I want to move my body in ways that bring joy.”

Values act like a compass—they guide your direction without creating the all or nothing pressure that often comes with numeric targets. Research shows that goals rooted in personal values are more motivating and emotionally safe, helping you stay consistent without guilt or shame when life gets messy.

So, as you set intentions for the year ahead, try shifting the focus:

  • From weight to well-being

  • From restriction to nourishment

  • From perfection to progress

This compassionate mindset doesn’t just support physical health, it nurtures mental resilience and self-worth. After all, health is about living more, not less.
