Pick and Mix 29 May 2024

As part of the Community Wealth Builder offer, we support groups with monthly ‘Pick and Mix’ litter picking events as well as hosting a monthly ‘Netwalk’ encouraging groups to come along and consider collaborations and chat about funding opportunities.  Each month we visit different groups across the city.

On May 29th 2024 as part of the ‘Remake Learning Festival’ and in conjunction with H W Martin Waste, Advance Doncaster, and Regenerative Neighbourhoods we visited Edlington Community Organisation (ECO) to help to run an educational event with children and their carers to encourage recycling.  The event started with a lovely breakfast prepared by the volunteers at ECO, then we all joined in with an informative and immersive education session put on by colleagues from H W Martin, who knew only 5% of rubbish ends up in Landfill – not me!  Immediately after the talk we donned our High-Vis vests and went out for a litter pick along the High Street in Edlington.  This event saw over 20 volunteers pick over 20 bags of rubbish up from the surrounding areas and this also resulted in 5 bags full of cans ready for ECO to sort, crush and recycle, ECO hold regular litter picks and now have the eventual goal of buying a commemorative bench with the proceeds from recycling the cans. 

We provided a healthy buffet lunch which was enjoyed by all, and the children were presented with a certificate, a trophy and a goodie bag to thank them for their efforts. 

The issues around littering in Edlington has been raised at the Positive Action Group hosted by Well Doncaster so we hope that by educating children and adults alike about the benefits of recycling that this will help to keep Edlington a clean and tidy place to live.
